Fractional Content Strategist vs. Full-Time Hire: A Founder’s Guide to the First Content Hire
Devansh Trivedi — 23 June 2026 · 4 min read

Founders often frame this as a budget question. It’s really a question about how much ongoing strategic ownership the role needs, and how quickly, since that’s what changes between a fractional engagement and a full-time hire more than the paycheck does.
What a fractional strategist is built for
A fractional arrangement works well when the need is bounded: standing up the initial system, running the first few months of content and outreach, and leaving behind a process an internal team can run. It’s a strong option for a company that isn’t ready to commit to a full-time salary but needs the system built now rather than later.
What a full-time hire is built for
A full-time content strategist makes more sense once the company is committed to content as an ongoing growth channel, not just a one-time build. The role expands over time: managing writers, expanding into new topics, owning the relationship between content and revenue in a way that benefits from being embedded in the company full time.
A model that works for a lot of early-stage teams
Some companies start fractional, get the system built and proven, then convert the same person to full time once the results justify the role.
This avoids the two most common mistakes: hiring full time before there’s a clear system to run, or hiring an agency for execution before any strategy exists to execute.
Case study
The fractional version of this is what my agency runs: same zero-to-one system, bounded engagement.

Not, can we afford a full-time hire. Instead: do we have a content system yet, or do we need one built first. The answer to that question points you toward the right model faster than a budget conversation does.
I work both ways. I built Planet Wealth’s content and SEO function as a full-time strategist, and I run The Content Beacon, where clients get the same zero-to-one system on a fractional basis. If you’re weighing this decision, I’m happy to talk through which model actually fits where your company is right now.

I work both ways — full-time in-house and fractional through The Content Beacon. Tell me where your company is right now and I’ll tell you which one I’d recommend, even if it isn’t me.
